On Monday, President Trump formally directed the Pentagon to create a 6th branch of the US military for Space Forces. For those of you who aren't familiar with your military branches, these are the 5 branches right now:
|
Congress still has to review this move. But many are wondering what would be the real purpose of a space force, and where is this idea coming from? They're probably not gonna go around on Mars to fight aliens.
But can we really expect space walk laser fights to defend space stations?
Are we looking more at a Star Fleet with spaceships defending our space assets?
Or maybe Trump has a plan for a sinister secret space weapon.

On a serious note, there are legitimate military uses in space. The Air Force already has a Space Command with strategic military satellites to help with communications, intelligence, and a defense system for ICBMs. A Space Force would likely look more like that with a high tech coordinated system of satellites and drones, to protect and assist our assets in space, and mostly to help our troops on earth.
|
What prompted Trump to do this? Russia did have some tech improvements on its intercontinental missile system. But more likely Trump recently watched Starship Troopers on Netflix. Or Maybe he remembered some good old 80s morning cartoons.

But to all the naysayers out there, if anything, at least this move may at the very least start to deter aliens from freely coming in and conducting anal probing on our planet.
