An Epiphany from Hans Dirk

Hans stared through the picture window intently.  The night air was chilly and the grass was wet with dew.  His prey's face flickered in the pulsing light from the television set.  He watched as she dozed in and out of sleep.  He had been casing this block for almost a month.  This is the house he picked.  The woman was single.  Her husband had passed away several years ago.  She was in her sixties but still attractive.  She met all of Hans' criteria.

His pulse was low and his breathing normal.  He had his body and mind in perfect tune for what he was going to do.  He briefly reflected back to the first time he had done this.  He was nervous and sloppy, but the feeling he got was what he had been searching for.  He felt complete for a moment after that first time.  That's the feeling that kept bringing him back...back to the stalking, the watching, the raping, and the killing.  It filled the empty spot where is soul had been. That's why he sat staring at this woman at midnight on a cool, summer night.

He stood up and hurried around the back of the house.  He pulled out his gloves and lock pick.  Hans went into a silent hunt like he had done 12 times before.  His focus was broken for a moment when he heard a car turn down the alley.  He strode behind a bush and waited for the car to pass.  As the car crept towards him, Hans heard something magical...something that pulled the murderous impulse from his core.  He dropped his gloves and pick and wept.  You may wonder what sound could have given Hans Dirk this amazing epiphany.  It was a bit of powerful magic that has touched us all....
