Election Acceptance and Concession Speeches
Even though I didn't vote for him, McCain is a hero and great American. He would've gotten my vote in a finger snap in 2000, but I didn't get that choice. Compromising his "maverick appeal" in 2008 to get the nomination and to motivate the far right to campaign for him as well as choosing a profoundly bad running mate were contributory to me considering and ultimately voting for the opposition.
I was, however, moved and impressed by McCain's concession speech. He showed a ton of class in gracefully conceeding and encouraging his electorate to work together as Americans to get through our current financial, social, and global crisis. I was moved by his emotion and sincerity. He discouraged divisiveness and spite and encouraged patriotism.
Obama's speech was also good. I enjoyed seeing his happy little girls and wife on stage to accept the position of first family with him. But I'm sad to say that there was a part of me that fantasized about him doing something to fuck with the rednecks that slandered him because of his middle name and the people that he served on education reform committees with due to their pasts. How cool would it have been for him to come out on stage in a turban. His wife behind him in a birka doing the tongue trilling thing "lalalalalalalalala!" and a bunch of Lois Farrakahn militant black men waving AK-47s over their heads yelling "Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar!" over and over. Obama would approach the podium, raise a fist over his head and scream, "Death to the infidels! Thank you! Goodnight!" and walk off stage.
I could just see the hastily packed Chevelles, El Caminos, and Jeep Wranglers racing to the Mexican border.
