I bought a Ruger GP100 about a month ago. It's a full sized, .357 with a six inch barrel.
I stopped on the way home from work with my daughter and we shot a box of shells at a little indoor range by where I work. I shot half a box of .357 magnums and she shot half a box of .38 specials. She's still afraid of the magnum rounds. She flinches bad enough now shooting the .38s.
There's a gun show here on Saturday. I'm thinking of buying a .357 lever action carbine. I like the idea of shooting one type of ammunition. I'd like to buy a Henry, but they're too damn expensive. They're nice though:
The Uberti is even nicer, and even more expensive:
I'll probably end up with a "value" rifle like the Marlin. It shoots well, but isn't quite as fancy as the above rifles:
The barrel isn't quite as long as the Henry or the Uberti either. That gives it a tad less muzzle velocity.
I'm going to buy a hand reloading kit while I'm there. You can only load a bullet a minute or so with the hand kits.
For just over $20, you can get the tools you need to reload your own brass. Right now, .357 bullets cost about $.50 each. I can reload for less than half that. These things really work. Hand loading gives you a more consistent powder charge than bigger reloaders. You can even tweek your charge.
I had a friend that used one of these. He had a .357 LCR
It was physically painful to fire magnum rounds through it. The first shot and your right hand was numb with that pissant little grip and featherweight frame. He handloaded magnum shells with 25% less powder. He ended up with what worked like a hot .38 special round. It still had plenty of power, but the pistol was easier to control.
It's been a while since I've been shooting. My X just wasn't into it. My girlfriend loves to go shooting. Once I get the rifle, we can both shoot at once out of the same box of shells.
These are fairly good choices for the zombie apocalypse too. I can use any .38 or .357 ammo I find. I've got a revolver that you can hammer nails with and still count on to operate. You can clean the damn thing with soap and water as long as you've got some oil for it. Plus, I've got an easy to handle rifle that is deadly accurate with iron sights up to 100 meters that uses the same ammo as my pistol. What's more, for zombie attacks and human looter attacks, the .357 is a premium self defense round. You can load the rifle on the fly too. It can hold 10 rounds.
