Tears and Taxi Cabs
Your tears ran down your cheeks, off your chin, and onto my chest. I felt the sting of their pain. Your red eyes revealed how much I hurt you. I can not change the reality of the situation. No amount of apologies or telling you how much I love you will relieve the force of this crushing blow. "Jesus, how can I do this". I said to myself. You turned up and looked at me like you had just read my thoughts. I was scared to know what you were thinking.
We lay on the couch, wrapped up tightly in each others arms, neither ready to let go. The minutes flew by and morphed into hours. At some point we drifted off to sleep. I felt you slip out of my arms and gather up your clothes. I heard the door shut and I quietly whispered, "I love you, goodbye." I imagined you walking out into the damp midnight air and hailing a taxi. I didn't know if I'd ever see you again, but I knew we had been closer than I would ever be to anyone again.
