If you've never seen these colorful trees in person, you might think this is an art installation or photoshop project. But it's not. They are 100% real. -
2.
They are called rainbow eucalyptus trees (eucalyptus deglupta) -
3.
They're so fantastical and Seussian that it can be difficult to bend your mind around the idea of walking through a forest full of them. -
4.
There are only 5 islands between Australia and China upon which these trees are native. -
5.
The first non-natives to see these colorful forests must have thought they’d accidentally licked a toad! -
6.
The many colors you see on rainbow eucalyptus trees result from pieces of bark that flake and dry into different colors and expose the trees’ bright green inner bark, which likewise changes colors as it matures. -
7.
A time-lapse of these trees would reveal bark transitioning from bright green to dark green, to blue, to purple, then orange and finally to a brownish maroon. -
8.
Not only are they colorful, but these trees grow freakishly fast: up to 8 feet per year. -
9.
They can reach a maximum height of around 246 feet in just past than 30 years in optimal growing environments. -
