1.
MK Ultra: The people over at the CIA have been up to a few nasty tricks in their time. For 20 years the agency ran a programme called MK ultra in which they tried finding chemicals to control people’s minds. The spy agency had a range of goals with the programme, which included giving foreign spies drugs to make them confess to what they had done, as well as chemicals that made people completely dependent on another, and would do exactly what the other person told them to do. Another experiment was to see if they could make enemy soldiers confused and irrational without realising they had been sprayed with the chemical. It wasn’t stopped until 1973 and there’s no official confirmation on the amount of people who were experimented on. -
2.
Josef Mengele and twins: Mengele was a doctor who worked at Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz and he fascinated about a way to make sure Aryan mothers could give birth to twins who also had blond hair and blue eyes. He felt this was a way the “future could be saved”. -
3.
The Hofling hospital experiment: In 1966, psychiatrist Charles K Hofling wanted to see if nurses could take orders from doctors unquestioningly; the nurses would receive a call from a doctor who gave them orders to administer 20mg of a fictitious drug to patients, the labels of which made clear 10mg was the maximum safe dose. 21 out of 22 of the nurses did exactly as they were told in the experiment. -
4.
Japanese germ warfare weapons: After World War 2, the Japanese used their Chinese captives for experiments. They tested germ warfare weapons on them and also looked for a cure for gangrene. In order to find the cure, they actually gave the Chinese gangrene, thousands of prisoners were killed as a result. -
5.
Henry Cotton: Cotton thought that mental illness was caused by different parts of the body going wrong and if you didn’t know better, you’d probably have trusted him since he was Head of Asylum for the mentally ill at a hospital in the U.S. The doctor removed teeth, tonsils and other parts of inmates body. -
6.
The STD experiment : This one was only unravelled in 2010 and led Barack Obama making a huge apology for America’s mad experiment. Scientists wanted to see if penicillin could cure syphilis so they paid prostitutes to go to Guatemala to spread the disease. It’s estimated that 1300 people were infected in the experiment. -
7.
Lauretta Bender: Bender administered electric shocks to children’s brains before giving them an adult sized dose of the drug LSD in a theory she had for curing what was known as childhood schizophrenia. -
8.
MI6: Now, us British weren’t much better – in 2006 the spy agency paid out thousands to former soldiers, sailors and airmen whom they’d given LSD to in the 1950’s without knowledge or consent from the military men. -
9.
Sarin: In another set of experiments by the British government, soldiers were asked to volunteer for testing what they were told was ‘a cure for the common cold’. In reality, they were being videotaped whilst tested with chemical weapons, including the nerve gas sarin. Though many did survive, they had serious health problems and one soldier was in fact killed. An inquest in 2004 found that 23 more servicemen were exposed to the gas after death.
