A bill passed by the Hawaii state Senate on Friday, 19-4 that would raise the smoking age to 21. If the governor signs the bill into law, it will make Hawaii the first state to raise the legal smoking age. -

The bill also includes a prohibition of sale, purchase or use of electronic cigarettes for those under the age of 21 -

This is clearly a response to recent studies that show e-cigarettes are on the rise among teenagers -

The penalty for individuals who are caught breaking the law would be fined $10 for the first offense, and any future violations would be subject to a $50 fine or mandatory community service. -

However, politicians are always looking for ways to get notoriety for doing something, anything, and it is almost never has the consumer’s best interest in mind. -

Gov. David Ige hasn’t yet decided whether he will sign the bill, and his staff has to vet all bills for legal issues, he said. -

Most U.S. states set the legal smoking age at 18, while some are set at 19. There have been some local cities and counties, including New York City and Hawaii County, have already raised the smoking age to 21.
