1.
Often hearing about a place called "Three Castle Head", one day, while taking some postcard-style photos of sheep, a man decided he had to find out if it was true. -
2.
A man gave him directions to the rumoured castle. "Walk over the hill in this direction for 35 minutes" was what he said. -
3.
There was no path. -
4.
The hike was muddy. -
5.
This was the only human habitation he saw on the half-hour walk. -
6.
And there it was. Three castles. The stories were true. Built in 1207 apparently. -
7.
The big castle looked to be in great condition. Dry masonry construction, apparently. -
8.
Most surprising was the 200ft drop to the jagged North Atlantic coastline of Ireland, just west of the castle. Proper waves and rocks. -
9.
Here is the main castle, as he looked for an entrance. -
10.
This arch looks promising. -
11.
There was an elaborate rusted lock on the gate. -
12.
It seemed to be rusted shut. The castle was spacious. -
13.
There was a passageway in the roof. -
14.
The two other castles were smaller, probably some sort of watchtowers. -
15.
This one beside the lake was in good condition. -
16.
The courtyard of the watchtower. -
17.
This gate was open! He had to go inside. -
18.
A rocky floor, no traps visible. -
19.
The walls had lots of small windows. -
20.
View from a window, quite beautiful actually. -
21.
There had been previous visitors, this looks like a toothbrush, somebody must have spent a night here. -
22.
Looking out through the door. -
23.
Finally, the middle castle was the smallest and most ruined, with a modern gate on the front wall. -
24.
Lots of pieces of iron inside, a substantial space. -
25.
He couldn't get in, but I stretched my arm through the gate, around the corner with my phone to grab some photos. -
26.
And that was it. It might be worth returning with a drone or some free running friends. Dunlough Castle, it's called. Here's a token shot of some sheep on the coast. -
27.
Bonus photo of an old winch.
