Launched in 2017, The 'Rat Cafe' was opened to give people a taste of extraordinary, while educating them about domesticated pet rats. One woman said "it was funny and horrifying at the same time."

"Drinking coffee while a rat is on the loose? That's not for the faint of heart," a statement from a Rat Cafe 'Dungeon' spokesman acknowledges.

For those worried about pesky food safety and hygiene codes, a health agency confirmed the dungeon will follow all food service rules, and that food will be cleared out before the rats are allowed into the "cafe."

The rats are all sourced from rat rescue nonprofit, Rattie Ratz, based out of Clayton. The rats are assumed to all be well-behaved, and should one of the "Ambassador Rats" strike your fancy and you find yourself wanting one as a pet — Rattie Ratz also does adoptions.

It's supposed to be an intentionally confusing experience: sit in a nice bistro-style eatery with a Barbary Coast theme with rats scurrying around.
