The ancient baked goods were found during a dig on the banks of the Danube in Regensburg, Germany, and are estimated to be between 250 and 300 years old. -

The pretzels definitely don’t look appetizing. The remains were burnt, making the pretzels look like several small lumps of coal -

But as it turns out, the fact they were burned helped the pretzels to withstand the test of time. And by using carbon dating, archeologists predict that they were created between 1700 and 1800. -

spokeswoman for the Bavarian Office for Historical Conservation, said the pretzels actually don’t look that different than the ones we see today. “It’s a normal pretzel, maybe a little smaller than today,” -

During the dig, archeologists also found three small cakes and a fragment of another pastry. -

Unfortunately, no mustard or beer were found in the search (drat!). -
