  - he leads rehearsals to get the sound he wants, then tells them how to play during the performance through his conducting. If he doesn't like how something is sounding, he changes up the pattern and style to get what he wants. the orchestra is constantly watching.

  - he does give the tempo, it's just not necessary in a piece like this where it's the same tempo throughout... his most important job is giving the style - it's the orchestra's job to play how he tells them to. I guarantee this would sound different with a different conductor.

  - so, it's basically like mozart's 'queen of the night' aria in a more modern style. difficult, but not impossible for trained sopranos. she has a nice range though...
