      • Don't worry Port, I'm on your side. You guys wouldn't care if it was some random person who hasn't been to this section before, and even if you would there's really no reason to.

      • Frankly I don't see at all how that is an answer to my second question. As for the first question, that isn't technically proof that we would have a choice. God could decide where people were going before they died, or before he even created them. And what of the religions that don't have heaven or hell?

      • I don't get it; if there was a God, why is it obvious that he would want us to choose, or that he would be prouder if you "climbed your way out of the dirt"? I don't believe in god(s), but how can you claim to know what he/she/it would or wouldn't want if one existed? On a side note, anyone who believes that god is omniscient (which is likely a large amount of people) has to believe that their life is pre-meditated.

      • I don't think there are degrees of self-awareness, either you are or you aren't. That being said, humans aren't the only self-aware animals. Others, like dolphins, apes, and elephants (and I think magpies) are also self-aware. So I disagree with the statement that humans are the most self aware and therefore the most valued animals. I think humans are the most valued organism to humans because we've evolved to value the life of our own kind over the life of another.

      • The name thing is absolutely ridiculous; why should he have to legally change his middle name just because a bunch of idiots think that sharing a name with someone equates you to that person. Here's his birth certificate: http://fightthesmears.com/articles/5/birthcertificate

      • Good blog, but the "Big Bounce" theory that you talk about isn't the only one out there that tries to explain what will happen. You've also got the Big Freeze, where the universe keeps expanding until everything dies off from the lack of heat, and eventually, in about 10^100 years, all that's left are lone photons, electrons, and neutrinos traveling around randomly in the darkness. Then there's the Big Rip, that says that all materials will eventually disintegrate into elementary particles and radiation due to the increasing density of phantom dark energy. Then there's the Big Crunch, which is basically the Big Bang in reverse. There may be a Multiverse, where ours is just one in an infinite sea of (parallel) universes. There are others, and these are very basic summaries of the theories, but I don't want to sit here all day.

      • Nice blog, but I have a few problems with it. First off, how can you be an agnostic deist? Your statement "here is a divine power but it is unknowable to us" seems directly contradictory to me; how can you know there is one if it is unknowable, and how can you know it's unknowable? But the bigger issue is the other part; how the laws of the Universe seem to require a Creator. I could get kind of deep into this, but basically if you claim that some sort of supernatural being started it all, it begs the question of what started the supernatural being.

About Me

"When I, a thoughtful and unblessed Presbyterian, examine the Koran, I know that beyond any question every Mohammedan is insane, not in all things, but in religious matters. When a thoughtful and unblessed Mohammedan examines the Westminster Catechism, he knows that beyond any question I am spiritually insane. I cannot prove to him that he is insane, because you never can prove anything to a lunatic — for that is a part of his insanity and the evidence of it. He cannot prove to me that I am insane, for my mind has the same defect that afflicts his... When I look around me, I am often troubled to see how many people are mad."

"I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it."

"Of all the creatures that were made he [man] is the most detestable. Of the entire brood he is the only one — the solitary one — that possesses malice. That is the basest of all instincts, passions, vices — the most hateful...He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain."
